Knoxville’s new alt-weekly, the Knoxville Mercury, has finally arrived! You can find an issue in racks in retail stores, restaurants, and street racks around Knoxville. More distribution rack locations are coming. Please support local, independent journalism by picking up a copy and patronizing the advertisers. In this inaugural issue, you will find my first column with commentary on the importance of local arts coverage and a look ahead at the rest of the classical music season. And, there will be more to come in future issues. Thanks for reading.
Arts Knoxville was created by Alan Sherrod in 2014 following the closure of the alternative weekly Metro Pulse, a publication on which he had been the classical music writer since 2007. He was the classical and new music writer for the Knoxville Mercury from its launch in March 2015 until its closure in July 2017. He has also contributed music content to the Nashville Scene and other publications around the U.S, including the website, Classical Journal.
Mr. Sherrod was a recipient of a 2010 Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts — the Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera — under the auspices of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
