The professional premiere of Sweets By Kate, by Griffin Candey, is the next vehicle for Marble City Opera, Knoxville’s chamber opera company. For this production, MCO finds itself in two new venues, the Knoxville Museum of Art and Sugar Mama’s Bakery in the 100 block of Gay Street on two separate performance days.
The work, a contemporary blend of reality twisted with fantasy, features MCO artistic director Kathryn Frady Marvel in the role of Kate, with the role of her partner Elizabeth sung by Brooke Larimer. The cast: Carl Silverton (Brandon Evans), Liz Brigmann (Brooke Larimer), Kate Mayfield (Kathryn Frady), Joe Brigmann (Jonathan Ten Brink), Doofey MacLaran (Michael Gonzales), Woman 1 / Souffle Lady (Maxwell Porterfield), Woman 2 (Maggie Ramsey), Woman 3 (Alex Engle), Mrs. Webster (Ryan Colbert), Denise (Noelle Harb),Radio Girl (Lindsey Helton), Man 1(Breyon Ewing), Man 2 (Taylor Colton Stone), Golf Man (Maurice Hendricks), Chorus (DC Miles).
The work is scored for string quartet and piano: Inner Voices String Quartet (Rachel Loseke and Ruth Bacon, violins; Christina Graffeo, viola; and Jeanine Lafitte, cello) — Bernadette Lo, piano.
The stage director is Scott Skiba; the conductor is Peter Leonard.
