The University of Tennessee Opera Theatre is once again downtown at the Bijou Theatre, this time for a production of Mozart’s final opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). The production, directed by James Marvel with musical direction by Kevin Class, runs for four performances from Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon. Tickets: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 60+, and $5 for students with school ID and youth 18 and under. Tickets available at the Tennessee Theatre box office or at ticketmaster.com
The opera’s first performance was September 30, 1791, at the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, with the librettist, Emanuel Schikaneder, in the role of Papageno. Mozart, although ill at the time, conducted the premiere. The composer died just over two months later on December 5.
