Two very different experiences await Knoxville opera lovers this Saturday—but you’ll have to choose.
If your operatic interest favors hearing talented young singers at the beginning of their careers, check out the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for the Middle/East Tennessee District being held at UT’s Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall in the Haslam Music Center. Approximately 35 singers, age 30 and younger, will compete for the right to advance to the Southeast regional competition, and ultimately, to the national finals in New York City. The audition day runs from 10 AM until all the registered applicants have sung for the judges. Come to hear one singer, a few, or stay the day to see the judges’ decision—but respect for contestants dictates that you enter the hall only during breaks between singers. It is FREE to attend for the audience.
On the other hand, if your operatic interest runs to the ultimate finished product, you’ll want to head over to the Regal Cinemas West Town Mall 9 multiplex as the Metropolitan Opera—Live in HD screenings continue with a performance of Verdi’s Nabucco, live from the stage of the Met in NYC. Placido Domingo sings the title role, joined by Liudmyla Monastyrska (Abigaille), Jamie Barton (Fenena), Russell Thomas (Ismaele), and Dmitry Belosselskiy (Zaccaria). James Levine conducts.
