In Sunday’s Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Grand Finals Concert, UT Alumna Alexandria Shiner emerged as one of five winners in this year’s Grand Finals competition. The soprano, most recently a member of Washington National Opera Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, received her Masters of Music from the University of Tennessee in 2016. While at UT, Shiner’s UT Opera Theatre performances included the roles of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Magda Sorel in The Consul, and the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
Shiner’s Grand Finals performance consisted of two arias “Dich, teure Halle” from Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser and “To this we’ve come” from Menotti’s The Consul. That role of Magda Sorel in The Consul is one that Shiner performed at Washington National Opera as well as with UTOT.
The other winners were mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Beteag, baritone Blake Denson, tenor Jonah Hoskins, and soprano Denis Velez.
Shiner is scheduled to sing the role of Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Met in the 2020-21 season.
