Friedrich Schorr was an Austrian-Hungarian bass-baritone, notably active at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1930s and 40s, and known for his Wagnerian roles. The American Prize in Vocal Performance—Friedrich and Virginia Schorr Memorial Awards— honors his memory as well as that of his wife, Virginia Schorr, who taught studio voice at the Manhattan School of Music and the Hartt School of Music for nearly fifty years.
The 2021 winner of The American Prize in Voice in the Professional Men’s Opera Division—The Friedrich & Virginia Schorr Memorial Award is Knoxville tenor Wayd Odle. Odle appeared in many UT Opera Theatre productions and has subsequently taken roles in Knoxville Opera productions. He has also sung for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Utah Philharmonic Orchestra, Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra, and other university orchestras. His performance as Tybalt in Knoxville Opera’s production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette was singled out in the Arts Knoxville review:
“Certainly noticeable, though, was tenor Wayd Odle as the full-of-hate Capulet, Tybalt. Odle, who has become quite well known in Knoxville for his leading roles with UT Opera Theatre, brought not only a sensational vocal performance, but also a rough-and-tumble dramatic character.”
Odle’s performance schedule, like that of all performers, was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic precautions. Nevertheless, he has remained busy, performing for a number of KO specials and outdoor performances during the year.
