Marble City Opera Sells Out Its Three-Performance Run of Tosca
In what has to be a show of both audience hunger for music and theatre, and optimism for a reinvigorated arts scene in Knoxville, Marble City Opera has indicated that its three-performance run of Puccini’s Tosca is sold out in advance of its Thursday, June 3, opening. For those missing out on a ticket, though, the production is being streamed as well. Choose the online streaming option on the purchase ticket page here.

Walker Evans Photographs at the UT Downtown Gallery
After one year at Williams College in Massachusetts, Walker Evans left school and moved to New York City with the desire to be a writer. Eventually, though, his attraction to the narrative process led him to bring the aesthetics of irony and description to the medium of photography.
In the summer of 1935, Evans joined his friend and writer, James Agee, on a trip to the South for a Fortune Magazine article on tenant farmers. Although the magazine never ran the Agee text with Evans’ photographs, the project eventually became Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Its words and photographs struck a nerve in the Depression Era and subsequently seemed to represent the human condition and tragedy of the times.
During the months of June and July, the UT Downtown Gallery will be showing photography from the Ewing Gallery’s permanent collection of Walker Evans’ photographs to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men.
This exhibition includes 50 framed photographs printed by the Library of Congress from Evans’ original negatives.
The exhibition opens on First Friday, June 4, with a reception from 5 PM till 8 PM. The show continues until July 31, 2021.
Normal gallery hours for the UT Downtown Gallery are 11am-6pm Wednesday – Friday and 10am – 3pm on Saturdays — free and open to the public.
