Knoxville Museum of Art
Organized by the Mint Museum of Charlotte, North Carolina, and opening at the Knoxville Museum of Art on Friday, August 20, Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum focuses on the art of collage, the assembly of a visual piece from materials of different types and origins.
This show consists of over 70 works by more than 30 artists, focusing on the legacy and influence that Charlotte native Romare Bearden has had on the recent stylistic growth of the medium of collage and on familiar figures in 20th Century art such as Sam Gilliam, Man Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist.
Along with the exhibition, the museum will also host Kolaj LIVE Knoxville. From Friday, November 5th, to Sunday, November 7th, 2021, artists, curators, and writers will gather for a weekend of collage making, slideshows, exhibition visits, and storytelling that deepen our understanding of collage and its place in 20th and 21st Century art.
Under Construction: Collage from The Mint Museum will continue at the KMA through November 7, 2021. Visitors should keep in mind that the museum has returned to its full hours of operation: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Flying Anvil Theatre
The Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing precautions dealt a blow to last year’s celebrations around the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibited states from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Flying Anvil Theatre was similarly forced to postpone its own original play based on the topic, SuffRAGE: To Give Voice. That production has now been re-scheduled and will run from Wednesday, August 18, through Saturday, August 21, at 7:30 pm with a matinee at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 22.
“The play was commissioned by Flying Anvil Theatre and researched and written by Linda Parsons and Jeannette Brown. They took on the challenge of not only celebrating women’s gaining the vote, but acknowledging the Black suffragists who were left behind. “History was especially stacked against Black suffragists,” notes co-writer Linda Parsons, “but as one Black character says, ‘When one of us stands up, we all stand.'”
