Knoxville Symphony Orchestra – “A Classical Christmas”
For the last six years—with the exception of the 2020 Covid-19 performance hiatus—the Knoxville Symphony has offered a late November/early December of winter solstice-period music that is generally classic, if not always classical. These concerts have become wildly popular with an audience looking for something a little different than Christmas carols and commercial favorites.
This year, the KSO’s “A Classical Christmas” returns to the Bijou Theatre for one performance on Sunday afternoon, November 28, at 2:30 PM. KSO resident conductor James Fellenbaum will lead the chamber orchestra in an intriguing mix of old and “sorta” new. If there is a featured work on the program, it most certainly would be Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin and Cello with violinist Sean Claire and cellist Andy Bryenton. The program also includes:
Mozart: German Dance No. 3 (Sleigh Ride)
Arcangelo Corelli: Christmas Concerto
Tchaikovsky: Selections From The Nutcracker: March, Chinese Dance, Chocolate, Sugar Plum Fairy, Trepak; Christmas Waltz
Robert Wendel: Overture To A Merry Christmas
Vaughan Williams: Fantasia On ‘Greensleeves’
Arrangements by Leroy Anderson, David Willcocks, and Arthur Luck

Clarence Brown Theatre: A Christmas Carol
Well, there’s good news…and bad news. The good news is that this is a NEW production of A Christmas Carol adapted and directed by UT’s Kate Buckley. The production opens on Friday, November 26, and marks CBT’s return to live performances following the pandemic shutdown. The bad news is that the entire run of the play sold out within a week of tickets being offered due to a partial ticket limitation to address social-distancing concerns for audience members. This is truly unfortunate as the premise of this production promises “a more intimate production which focuses on the language of Dickens, inventive theatricality, and the action of the ensemble to move the story forward.”
If you are one of the lucky who jumped on the bandwagon and scored tickets when they became available, this would probably be the ideal week to give thanks.
