There is an ineffable effect of Big Ears that sneaks into one’s cultural soul and changes how the world is viewed. Suddenly, new angles appear, colors are more saturated and grays more varied. Geometric patterns appear in building facades and in the shadows of everyday objects. There are dogs barking in the distance and car horns blare out in some kind of weird harmony. Feet shuffle, clothing rustles, doors slam, voices and languages and accents clash and merge, guitars cry out squelched by golden tones, smashed by percussion. Yet, life goes on.
As if held back by some magical force then released, Knoxville’s performance and visual arts life resumes with a vengeance. This week is the April First Friday and everything is possible.
