St. John’s Cathedral Arts Series: Chase Hawkins, trumpet, and Jason Overall, organ
Chase Hawkins, principal trumpet of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, joins Jason Overall, St. John’s Director of Music, in a program of music for trumpet and organ.
The featured work will be Okna (Windows) by the Czech composer Petr Eben. The inspiration for the work was Chagall’s stained-glass windows for the synagogue in Jerusalem, with the solemnity of the glass panels reminding one of the organ and the intense colors suggesting the sound of the trumpet. Eben maintains the instruments’ independence, allowing them to combine and separate in their own textural and rhythmic ways. The individual movements of the cycle are: The Blue Window, The Green Window, The Red Window and The Golden Window.
Also on the program:
Jason Overall: Fanfare
Ivan Jevtic: “Que le jour est beau!”
Louis Verne: From 24 Pièces en style libre (Pieces in free style), Opus 31
David Kelley: An American Triptych
Astor Piazzolla (arr. P. Chase Hawkins): Libertango

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Classical Christmas—Handel’s ‘Messiah’
The extremely popular Classical Christmas from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is usually a sellout in the Bijou every year. This year, the concert moves to the Tennessee Theatre to feature George Frideric Handel’s Messiah (the Christmas version). The move accommodates not only the expected audience size, but also to make room for the orchestra, large chorus, and soloists. Those soloists will be soprano April Martin, alto Diana Salesky, tenor Tim Pope, and bass Michael Rodgers. Aram Demirjian will conduct the KSO and the Knoxville Choral Society.
Also on the program is Victor Hely-Hutchinson’s delightful A Carol Symphony, reason alone to take in this always festive concert.
Sunday, November 27, 2:30 PM
Tennessee Theatre, 604 S. Gay Street, Downtown
