The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, the umbrella organization for the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and the Oak Ridge Chorus, has announced the results of its search for its next Music Director—Régulo Stabilito.
Stabilito was one of four finalist candidates for the position, conducting his audition concert this past August. That concert, “Six Degrees to Nadia Boulanger,” included works by Lili Boulanger, Nadia Boulanger, Aaron Copland, Astor Piazzolla, Jean Phillipe Rameau, Igor Stravinsky, and George Walker.
“I had a great experience working with members of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and the Oak Ridge Chorus back in August,” Stabilito says, “and I cannot wait to continue developing our relationship and presenting meaningful performance experiences of the masterworks and innovative and inclusive repertoire.”
A native of Venezuela, Stabilito received a music education in the world-renowned “El Sistema”, making a conducting debut at the age of twenty working with Maestro Jose Antonio Abreu. In the United States, he received DMA and MMA degrees from the University of Michigan. Academically, Stabilito spent the 2021-22 season as Visiting Director of Orchestral Activities and Professor of Conducting at Appalachian State University. He and his wife, Dr. Maria Fernanda Castillo, live in Knoxville, where she is an Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Tennessee School of Music.
Maestro Stabilito will make his initial appearance as conductor of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 3:00 PM in the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center.
