The Knoxville Museum of Art has announced the appointment of Steven Matijcio as the museum’s new executive director. Currently director and chief curator at the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston since 2019, Matijcio is succeeding David Butler, who retired in December as the museum’s Executive Director, a post he held since 2006.
Prior to his position in Houston, Matijcio served as Curator at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and was Curator at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for five years. Matijcio received a Master’s degree from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto.
Beginning his Knoxville tenure in late February, Matijcio is joining the KMA following the re-opening and expanded installation of Higher Ground, the museum’s permanent exhibition that seeks to celebrate the richness and diversity of East Tennessee’s visual culture.
