By Sunday afternoon, it will be time to shake off the snow and ice and take in a concert that shouldn’t be missed—whatever the weather. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Classics Series will reconvene at the Bijou Theatre for an afternoon program that will feature KSO Principal Flute Devan Jaquez in British composer Malcolm Arnold’s Flute Concerto No. 1. Although Arnold is best known for his film scores, including an Oscar win for The Bridge on the River Kwai, he was quite prolific in other genres. The 1954 Flute Concerto was composed for flutist Richard Adeney, a friend and Principal Flute for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This energetic piece is a knock-your-socks-off mix of sassy syncopations and out-of-the-ordinary harmonies. James Fellenbaum will conduct.
Also on Maestro Fellenbaum’s program are two other very different but compelling works: Excerpts from Five Folksongs in Counterpoint by Florence Price and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 (“Death and the Maiden”) as arranged by Gustav Mahler for chamber orchestra.
