A deal may have been worked out with Mother Nature to spare Knoxville’s March First Friday from the rain, but one will still need a jacket that evening. That’s a small price to pay for being able to shake off the February blues and take in the March gallery openings and festivities.

RED Gallery: The Hirschhorn Collection of Paintings by Steve Keene
“Revolutionary”… “The assembly-line Picasso”… “a churning waterfall of creation” … “the Johnny Appleseed of art” … “the punk Picasso” — it takes a special kind of artist to inspire that kind creative adjective-ry.
Steve Keene’s corner of the art world is one quite different from the majority of artists. His paintings surge with color and immediacy, “a punk-rock ethos” that runs counter to almost everything we think we know about art. Based in a Brooklyn studio, Keene creates 50+ paintings each day, having produced over 300,000 pieces during a 30 year career.
Prior to his live painting appearance at Big Ears, a collection of his paintings is being shown at the Red Gallery starting on March First Friday. Called the Hirschhorn Collection’s “Paintings by Steve Keene,” this exhibition of some of his rarer works will run until the gallery space is re-fit for Keene’s live painting during the festival weekend. Of course, Big Ears begins Thursday March 21.
RED Gallery, 130 W. Jackson Ave, Knoxville, TN 37902.

Y’all Don’t Hear Me: The Black Appalachia — An Ode to Nikki
“The exhibition title was inspired by my late grandfather, Floyd Whiteside, a retired pastor from Muscle Shoals, Alabama who resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He would often use the phrase in his sermons when the spirit was moving or when he wanted to make sure the congregation was keeping up. While preparing for the exhibition and thinking of home, his words kept ringing in my ear. “Y’all Don’t Hear Me” is a statement by someone who feels disregarded, and to me, that resonates with the Black Appalachian community. You don’t hear us because you’re not listening; you’re not listening because you don’t know we exist. I want to amplify our narrative and remind people that there are quality artists creating in the mountains.” – Kreneshia Whiteside-McGee
This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Dogwood Arts and the Big Ears Festival and curated by Kreneshia Whiteside-McGee.
