“Italian” is the key word for Sunday afternoon (September 15) as the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra begins its 2024-25 season. UTSO music director and conductor James Fellenbaum will lead the orchestra in a program of works that were written about Italy—either by an Italian composer, or by composers visiting Italy. Although the programming is focused, the music experience of the included works has a deliciously broad appeal for audiences.
The program—
Berlioz: Roman Carnival Overture
Launy Grøndahl: Trombone Concerto (with UT Faculty trombonist Alex van Duuren)
Puccini: Act III Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut
Tchaikovsky: Capriccio Italien
Note: Launy Grøndahl (1886 – 1960) was a Danish composer known primarily for his Trombone Concerto, written in 1924 during a work period in Italy. This performance features UT College of Music faculty trombonist Alex van Duuren
