The University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra, a part of UT’s Natalie L. Haslam College of Music, opens its concert season this Sunday afternoon, September 14, at 4:00 PM in the Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building on the UT campus.
The orchestra, under music director and conductor James Fellenbaum, will open with Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to La Scala di Seta (The Silken Ladder). Fellenbaum and the orchestra will follow with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2.
Based on his programming choices for the fall’s concerts, Maestro Fellenbaum is clearly optimistic about this season’s symphony experience.
“I wanted to start off with a Beethoven Symphony,” Fellenbaum explained, “we haven’t done one since the 9th in 2020. I felt the second symphony would be a great piece to start the year. The College’s oboe studio has been really developing lately, in both quality and number of players, and so I programmed the Rossini as it has a prominent solo oboe part. In addition, that overture has a classical-era size and feel to it, complementing the Beethoven.”
As usual, the public is encouraged to attend —UTSO concerts are free.
